Important Health Tips To Keep Seniors Healthy And Fit

Staying healthy is important at any age, but more so staying active and healthy as a senior is vital. Here are some health tips for seniors to live longer and thrive.

QUIT SMOKING

Take this important step to improve your health and combat aging if you are a chronic smoker. Smoking enhances your chances for cancer, stroke and heart failure. So quit smoking, eat well and keep active to prevent those urges.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT

Extra weight increases your risk for heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure so make sure you are always at a healthy weight. You can do so by staying up on your exercise and eating right and replace sugary drinks with water.

PREVENT FALLS

We become vulnerable to falling as we get older. Prevent falls and injury by removing loose carpet or throw rugs. Keep paths clear of electrical cords and clutter, and use night-lights in hallways and bathrooms.

STAY UP TO DATE ON PREVENTATIVE SCREENINGS

There are many preventative screenings to stay up to date with when getting older as women should begin mammography screening for breast cancer and men should be checked for prostate cancer yearly.

PREVENT SKIN CANCER

As we age, our skin grows thinner and becomes drier and less elastic so protect your skin from the sun and avoid ultraviolet rays that can cause skin cancer.

GET REGULAR DENTAL, VISION AND HEARING CHECKUPS

Your teeth and gums will last a lifetime if you care for them by brushing and flossing daily and getting regular dental checkups. Also get your hearing and vision checked as common eye problems such as cataracts and glaucoma can impair vision  and hearing loss occurs due to loud noise exposure.

MANAGE STRESS

Try exercise or meditation as a way to cope with stress.  Even as we age we still need to be social so go out with friends and have some fun.

CONTINUE INTIMACY

Despite the age, sexual intimacy is important so there is no reason to limit your sexual enjoyment. Learn about physical changes that come with aging and get suggestions to help you adjust to them, if necessary.
