Most of us have experienced heartburn at some point in our lives, that feeling of a slight hiccup then followed by a burning sensation in your chest and throat. It’s an awful, uncomfortable feeling that is triggered by foods we eat that tend to be spicy, greasy, acidic or fatty. So what can you do when heartburn strikes? Here are some quick tips to help you get rid of it.
WEAR LOOSE CLOTHING
Heartburn happens when the contents of your stomach rise up into your esophagus where stomach acids can burn the tissue. Sometimes wearing too tight clothing compressing against your stomach can cause this. So loosen that clothing.
STAND UP STRAIGHT
Your posture can also contribute to heartburn especially if you’re sitting or lying down. Sit upright as an upright posture puts less pressure on your lower esophageal sphincter. Your lower esophageal sphincter is a ring of muscle that helps stop stomach acid from rising into your esophagus.
MIX BAKING SODA IN WATER
Baking soda can be your best friend to fight heartburn as it can calm some episodes of heartburn by neutralizing your stomach acid. You need to dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink it slowly.
Ginger has been used as a remedy for heartburn for many years. Ginger has the ability to relieve nausea and various stomach issues. You can grate some fresh ginger root and make some ginger tea to relieve your heartburn.
It’s believed that licorice root can help increase the mucous coating of your esophageal lining, which may protect your esophagus from damage caused by stomach acid. In turn it then helps to reduce the threat of heartburn.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Apple cider vinegar is another home remedy that can be used to treat heartburn as it’s known to neutralize stomach acid. Try drinking diluted apple cider vinegar after a meal to help alleviate heartburn.
According to studies, chewing gum for 30 minutes after meals may help to reduce heartburn. Chewing gum tends to stimulate saliva production and swallowing which is supposed to help dilute and clear stomach acid from your esophagus which helps reduce heartburn.
AVOID CIGARETTE SMOKE
Some may not be aware, but smoking can contribute to heartburn. Stay away from smoking or second hand smoke inhalation as this can cause an attack of heartburn.
OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATION
There are plenty of over-the-counter medications that aid in reducing heartburn. From antacids, H2 blockers to proton pump inhibitors, they can be used to reduce stomach acid and eliminate heartburn symptoms.
So when heartburn hits, these are some of the remedies you can try to help reduce your symptoms. You can also consider adjusting your daily habits but avoiding your triggers, whether it be fatty or spicy foods, avoiding lying down after eating and maintaining a healthy weight level.
