CANNED FISH AND POULTRY
Canned fish and poultry can be safely kept without refrigeration for long periods upwards of five years if kept at room temperature. Some are even made in pouches now instead of cans which makes for easier storage, but they do have a shorter shelf life.
GRAINS
Rice, oats and barley are some great whole grains that have a much longer shelf life than other popular but perishable carbohydrate sources such as bread. Grains have such versatility and can be added to soups, salads and casseroles.
JERKY
Meat preservation is an aged old practice to keep protein sources from spoiling. Jerky is made by curing meat in a salt solution, then dehydrating it. Preservatives, flavorings, and other additive are sometimes used during processing. These days, jerky can be found in beef, salmon, chicken, buffalo, even coconut and banana. Some jerky can be safely kept for up to one year making them a good option in cases of emergency.
SOUP
Canned and dried soups can be a great choice as they are low in acid and can be kept at room temperature for up to 5 years, with the exception of tomato based types. Choose soups that are rich in healthy ingredients such as vegetables and beans and those low in sodium.
As with all foods, you should always check the labels for expiration dates.
